Reflection Warped

Monorail Monday
Walt Disney World

I hate to say it but due to inclement weather the Walt Disney World posts will have to continue. I was hoping to bring some of the great Florida weather back with me last week but it looks like my return had the opposite affect… I apologize. Forecast for most of this coming week is rain out here with me. Wishing your weather is better.

The start of the work week is also Monorail Monday in the Disney photography community. I am sure most of the regular readers of this blog are well aware of this fact as I do my best to contribute each week. This week is interesting though due to the nature of the image I chose to share.

The first image is my normal or classic monorail image. I love a reflection and when I can capture the monorail and its reflection I am one happy camper. As I was processing this image I became more aware of the unique quality of the reflection. It is distorted by a set of ripples traveling through the water. I chose to reprocess my image focusing on the distortion. The second image in this post is my result.

I changed the format to square and processed the image differently than my original. I started with a preset from Trey Ratcliff called ‘A Beautiful Release’ and modified it slightly. I also added a subtle vignette to keep you focused on the reflection. Did it work?

Monorail Monday
Future World, Epcot

Back in March of 2016, I drove my Mom and Grandpa done to Florida for their Spring stay at my Mon’s place in Lake Alfred. After getting everyone situated and the house opened up I snuck away one day for a visit to Epcot. The International Flower & Garden Festival had started and being this close was an opportunity I could not pass up. I still managed to get in quite a lot of monorail hunting on a single day visit… 🙂

Monorail Shade

There are classic views of the monorail while you are in Epcot. Views you must capture if you are a monorail enthusiast like myself. And then there are those different views of the monorail. The out of the ordinary views. Those are the views I look for. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. I haven’t made up my mind on this one yet. It is is different, I’ll admit.

While you are in Future World at Epcot the Monorail track passes over head while it makes the loop around Spaceship Earth. This is the big reveal! Your first look at Epcot as the Monorail is cruising into the station. If you are sitting on the right side of the car you will have a continual view of Spaceship Earth. On the left you get glimpses of the attractions in Future World or at the top of the loop you can see into World Showcase.

This image is from a bench almost directly under the track on the way to Mission: Space. My eye always catches contrasting colors and the yellow in the umbrella against the blue sky was a combination I wanted to incorporate. I have done another monorail image incorporating these umbrellas, but the closeness of the track I thought would provide a unique view. I fired off a burst of exposures but I liked one of the first as the monorail is starting to enter the scene. Negative space can enhance an image as much, if not more, than by filling the whole frame.
