Red Panda

Rosamond Gifford Zoo

This is the last weekend for the photo contest at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. I’m hoping I can make it out again on Sunday. The forecast is for some sun in the morning changing over to snow and clouds in the afternoon. I’m thinking early Sunday morning will be a quiet time at the zoo and I’ll have the place to myself. Until then, here is one of the Red Pandas talking to his companions up in the tree…

Indifference

Patas Monkey, Rosamond Gifford Zoo

This is not one of the images I picked to process from my trip to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo last week. I thought because I did not capture the face or focus on the eyes (as I have read is the right thing to do) I passed this one in my selection process.

As I sat down to work on my images this one kept speaking to me. Every time I saw this monkey I felt something for him. Maybe it is the feeling of solitude or loneliness. Thinking back to my time in front of the exhibit I realized it was his indifference to the activity from the other monkeys and even for those of us looking through the glass. Maybe I’m attributing too much, maybe not…

Winter at the Zoo

Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Syracuse , NY

Help! Each January the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse has a photo contest. I have participated in the past but last year I never managed to get my butt out to the zoo. As I stated in an earlier post this week, I planned to change my image capture dry spell this weekend with a last weekend opportunity to capture some images of the cool residents of the zoo.

Although it was the end of our month at work and I had to spend the morning getting parts out the door. I got back home around noon, changed my clothes, loaded up the camera and lenses, and hopped in the car for the hour drive to Syracuse. There were a few clouds in the sky but the sun managed to make an appearance a few times as I wandered the grounds of the zoo. Temperatures were in the low 40’s which made it a glove free time outside.  I had a great time!

Before my luck changed I made the rounds on the outdoor path to see who was out and about. There were a lot of chances to photograph the animals. I just need more practice at moving objects. Some of those critters just didn’t want to sit still for me.

I was smart this trip (and due to my change to the Olympus mirrorless system) I brought everything I might need in my messenger bag. This allowed my to switch lenses as the need arose. Some of those compounds let the animals escape us “shooters” by laying down a long way away. I was very happy with the performance of my 40-150mm lens (which is 80-300mm equivalent). Also, the 12-40mm f/2.8 lens let me get a fast enough shutter inside which I have struggled with in the past. I will also say that the internal stabilization of the E-M1 camera let me capture at a much lower shutter than I could with my old Nikon cameras.

Now for what I need your help with. I can submit two images for the photo contest. I narrowed down my choices to the following five. I would really appreciate everyone’s thoughts as to their favorites. If you can let me know in the comments which ones catch your eye then I will submit the two with the most votes. Thanks for helping me!

Animals

This week’s theme is barns and/or animals. I kinda failed at both! There are a few barns around the neighborhood (which for me is a short driving distance) and there are animals associated with the barns but nothing interesting poked its head out while I was exploring. I even tried to be cute and did some indoor portrait images of Pokemon plushies but was not happy with the results (I need a better backdrop, lol).

So I am going to use some images I captured last weekend at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. I mentioned earlier in the week that the trip was not as fulfilling as I had hoped due to the weather but I did manage a few nice images of the animals in the indoor enclosures. These images are always challenging as I have to really increase the ISO to get my shutter speed up to what I need to capture a non-blurry image. Luckily for me Topaz Labs DeNoise does a really nice job cleaning up the results.

Finally, the Zoo…

I finally managed to finish processing the images from my trip last month to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. A few of these have already made their way into blog posts but I wanted to include them here so everyone can enjoy the whole group. I managed to accumulate quite a few more images than I showcase here but these are my best from that day. Next time I will try using a circular polarizer to reduce any glare on the glass.

Anyone in the central NY area that is interested in visiting the zoo can check out all it has to offer here: Rosamond Gifford Zoo. I was very impressed with the zoo and will definitely be making additional trips out to visit. Maybe I’ll wait for spring so I can get some better outside images…
